Habitats and More

Today we were able to go into the Wonder Room and build our own habitats of SC animals! We learned that all animals and insects need 5 things from their habitat: food, space, shelter, water, and air.

How Do We Solve Addition Problems?

Some of us use base ten blocks to solve addition problems.

Some of use the traditional method to solve addition problems.

Some of us break the number up and use the expanded form strategy.

We all solve problems differently, but they all get us the right answer! I love using all of these different strategies because the math makes sense to each student.

There's a Frog in My Throat

Where does this saying come from we wondered. Well, today we found out when researching about animal life cycles! There is a frog that swallows its' tadpoles and then spits them out when they have grown into miniature frogs. Check this video out if you want to see for yourself. The boys loved it!

September 8th-12th

 Reading/Writing

This week we will be working on the different text features for informational text. We will be learning how the text features can help us understand the main idea of the text. We will also continue our centers this week, which will go with the topics we discuss in class. We will continue to work on how to use context clues to figure out unknown vocabulary words and using evidence to support our answers. Our reading test will be next Tuesday.

100 Book Challenge Goal

Targets this week will be  44 steps (good),  80 steps (better) by September 12th. We will be reading 2 steps (30 min.) in class this week. I will assign additional steps to be read at home each night.

*No more than 6 steps a night can be signed.

* Please be sure to sign your child’s 100BC log so they will get credit for their steps!

                           Math

In math this week we will start working on rounding. The students will be given their math homework for the whole week. They may work ahead if they need to or want to.  We will start a new Number of the Day on Monday.  Please make sure you are studying each section with your child each night but please DO NOT complete the rest.

 Science

We will begin our science unit of animal and insect life cycles. The students have already been working on life cycles in their science warm-ups so they have a great foundation. The students will have notes and vocabulary to study for this.

    Social Studies

We will continue to work our regions unit. The students will have something to study each night for this unit. Please check their planner and journal with additional information on what to study. They will have two quizzes on regions information and will also get more in depth information about each region. We will be working on SC Dailies throughout the week. Please make sure you are studying each section with your child each night but please DO NOT complete the rest.

      Student Super Star

Ian: This week in class he was working hard, always on task, and helping out others. Ian made himself stand out because he was always doing the right thing. We are so lucky to have Ian in our class to provide a good example.

Parent Super Stars

Please study at least five-ten minutes each night, each subject with your child, but please do not fill out any morning work. Our morning work is SC Dailies, Number of the Day, and Science Warm-Ups. They complete a section at a time in class and we review it. This way they are not studying the wrong answers.

Tests

Social Studies: Regions and Rivers quiz on Wednesday, Regions Vocab quiz on Thursday (quizzes do not count as much as tests, but still should be studied for)

Spelling: Test on Friday

Reminders

·         Please sign up for Class Dojo or get the app. It will really help you keep track of your student’s behavior in class. It is also a great way for me to message you or send reminders. Thank you!

·         PTA Fall Fundraiser

This year our PTA fall fundraiser is selling Mixed Bags. Every student was given information on it Monday at a pep rally. Please ask your student about what they learned in the pep rally and how they can help raise money for the school.

  • Planner

Please make sure to sign your child’s planner each night. I will be signing it every day for the first nine weeks. This will help you know that I have checked to make sure their homework is correct, and it will help me know that you are looking over their homework assignments. This is a new adjustment for them so I found that the signatures make for an easier transition.

  • Sepetember 11th: Goodies with Grandparents (7:00 am)
  • September 15th-Oct.3rd: MAP testing (More specific dates on when our class will go coming soon)
  • September 16th: Open House at 6:30pm
  • September 18th: Interims go home

Great Gentlemen

This week our catch of the week, Jayson, decided that we should learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. Here are some of the facts the students found:

SC Regions

This week we started investigating the different regions of SC. The students used their textbooks to find out different information about each region. I can't wait until each group presents their findings!
