Character Traits

Today we started our reading lesson by looking at  the pictures from the book Tough Boris without any text. The students wrote down different character traits they thought the picture showed and explained their answer.

Then we sequenced the pictures and read the book to see if our character traits were correct!

Great Gentlemen

Last week in class we talked about what a gentleman was and what makes someone great. These are the answers the students came up with.

This week our "Best Catch," Braden, gave us a great gentleman from history that we are going to find facts about. This is who Braden picked, Jackie Robinson, and a fact that Braden shared.

A Peek at our Week...
Reading/Writing
This week we will be reviewing the story Jump that we started last week. Each student will bring the book home twice this week to read it before the test. Please make sure you read and review this story with your child. They will need to log it on their 100 Book Challenge log and have it signed. We will also be practicing how to use context clues to figure out unknown vocabulary words, working on identifying character traits from different stories, and using evidence to support our answers. Our reading test will be on Friday.

100 Book Challenge Goal
Targets this week will be 22 steps (good), 40 steps (better) by August 29. We will be reading 2 steps (30 min.) in class this week. I will assign additional steps to be read at home each night.
*No more than 6 steps a night can be signed.
* Please be sure to sign your child’s 100BC log so they will get credit for their steps!

 Math
In math this week we will be working on place value to the ten thousands place. The students will be given their math homework for the whole week. They may work ahead if they need to or want to.  We are also still working together on Number of the Day. We will do a section at a time, and their homework will be to study that one section that night. You can practice by making up similar numbers and have them practice the skills. Please DO NOT have them fill out the rest of the morning work. We will have a Number of the Day test on Wednesday.

Science
We will begin our science unit with mini-lessons about life cycles of animals. The students will be working on Science Warm-ups and will study them at home. We will have a test on Science Warm-Ups next week.

Social Studies
We are finishing our SC Dailies. Our test will be on Thursday. Please make sure you are studying each section with your child each night but please DO NOT complete the rest. We will also start our regions unit. The students will have something to study each night for this unit.

Student Super Star
Braden: This week in class he was working hard to learn procedures and participating in class. He was always on task, friendly, and respectful. We are so lucky to have Braden in our class to provide a good example.

Parent Super Stars
Please study at least five-ten minutes each night, each subject with your child, but please do not fill out any morning work. Our morning work is SC Dailies, Number of the Day, and Science Warm-Ups. They complete a section at a time in class and we review it. This way they are not studying the wrong answers.
Tests
Math: Number of the Day on Wednesday
Social Studies: SC Dailies on Thursday
Reading: Jump Reading Test on Friday
Spelling: Test on Friday

Reminders
·         Please sign up for Class Dojo or get the app. It will really help you keep track of your student’s behavior in class. It is also a great way for me to message you or send reminders. Thank you!
·         PTA Fall Fundraiser
This year our PTA fall fundraiser is selling Mixed Bags. Every student was given information on it Monday at a pep rally. Please ask your student about what they learned in the pep rally and how they can help raise money for the school.
  • Planner
Please make sure to sign your child’s planner each night. I will be signing it every day for the first nine weeks. This will help you know that I have checked to make sure their homework is correct, and it will help me know that you are looking over their homework assignments. This is a new adjustment for them so I found that the signatures make for an easier transition.
·         August 29th: Wear your favorite college colors
  • No school on Monday, September 1st because of Labor Day.
  • Fall Pictures will be Tuesday, September 2nd
  • Sepetember 11th: Goodies with Grandparents (7:00 am)
·         Clubs will start the first week of September. Creating with Legos will not have their first meeting until the first of October, since they meet the first Monday of every
month. I will put reminders on the newsletter of when the club will meet.
